| Reiser murder trial to start amid confusing circumstances |

Hans Reiser, well-known open-source developer, is scheduled to go on trial May 7 for the murder of his wife, Nina Reiser, but in a bizarre turn of events, Wired is reporting that a former lover of Nina Reiser has confessed to killing eight people.
According to the report, Sean Sturgeon, a one-time friend of Reiser's, confirmed that he has confessed to eight murders but that he denies killing Nina Reiser. Wired also reported that in testimony in preliminary hearings in the case, Nina Reiser had once dated Sturgeon, but broke off their relationship in January 2006 because she was unhappy with his lifestyle and taste for sadomasochism.
Nina Reiser was last known to be seen at Reiser's home after she dropped off their children there in Oakland's Montclair area on September 3. She never returned to pick them up. Her car was later found abandoned in another part of Montclair.
For a time, the police treated the matter as a missing-person case, but Hans Reiser's attorney, William DuBois, said that "Police are doing everything in their power to treat him like a suspect, including seizing his house for three days and going over every inch of the premises and testifying against him in his attempt to get custody of his children."
Hans Reiser, best known as the creator and primary developer of the popular ReiserFS file system, which is often used in Linux distributions, had been fighting with Nina Reiser in a difficult divorce, which had finally been coming to a close.
On October 11, Reiser was accused of murder. Ms. Reiser's body still has not been found and her friends continue to maintain a website offering a $25,000 reward for any information about her whereabouts.
While Reiser no longer runs his company, Namesys, it is still active, and its developers are still working on the Reiser file systems. The newest version, Reiser4, is being given some consideration for adoption in a future version of the Linux kernel.
