Xandros/Scalix team on SMB Linux/groupware server combo
Apr. 20, 2006

Xandros Inc., a leading Linux desktop vendor, will finally be coming out with its server product at LinuxWorld Toronto in the week of April 23rd.

One question Xandros has had to answer is: what can this small, Canadian company bring to a Linux server market that's dominated by Red Hat and Novell? The answer is: a Debian-based server and desktop combination for SMBs (small and medium sized businesses).

On April 20th, Xandros strengthened this play by partnering with Scalix Corp., a major Linux and open-source email and calendaring messaging company. The companies agreed to add Scalix messaging and collaboration to the forthcoming Xandros Server, to provide an alternative to Microsoft Exchange messaging systems.

The companies claim that the integration of Scalix within Xandros Server will provide SMBs with an all-in-one groupware solution. Groupware users will be centrally managed through the Scalix management plug-in within the remote, all-graphical Xandros Management Console. The combined solution delivers email and calendaring with support for a wide array of rich email clients, including Outlook for Windows users.

To do this, the companies have added a new version of Scalix to the Xandros Server. This Scalix Xandros Edition is based on the Scalix Enterprise Edition and provides unlimited-use email and personal calendaring. It also supports a broad range of rich email clients including Outlook, Scalix Web Access, an AJAX-based web mail client, Evolution, wireless devices (including BlackBerry, Treo, and Windows Smartphones), and POP/IMAP clients.

The Scalix Xandros Edition comes tightly integrated with the Xandros Server and pre-configured, making it quick and easy to use. Its features include Exchange interoperability, support for wireless email/PIM, and automated migration tools. It also includes five premium user licenses for using the full-functionality of Outlook and group scheduling with free/busy lookup. Additional premium users can be added by purchasing more licenses via the Xandros online store.

"Xandros and Scalix are a great combination for small and medium businesses as both offer power without complexity," said Glenn Winokur, Scalix's CEO in a statement "This award-winning tandem provides superior functionality and performance versus costly alternatives, without their headaches."

"Scalix provides Xandros Server with the 'killer app' to penetrate the SMB space -- world-class messaging without Microsoft," said Andreas Typaldos, Xandros's CEO in a statement.

"Together we will address an enormous pent-up demand from SMBs by offering an enterprise-class Linux messaging solution without the need for specialized Linux server experience or costly retraining. It also gives resellers the ability to drive additional channels of revenue and deeply penetrate the Windows market, as they can now offer a Linux based solution while leveraging existing skill sets," added Typaldos.
