Dell and Novell Deliver the Linux Server Management Goods
Mar. 20, 2006

Dell and Novell are combining their respective server management programs -- OpenManage toolkits and ZENworks -- into a comprehensive, integrated package. ZENworks 7 Linux Management - Dell Edition aims to enable system administrators running Novell Inc. SLES (SUSE Linux Enterprise Server) or Red Hat Inc. RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) on Dell Inc. PowerEdge servers to manage both their hardware and software from a single console.

With Novell ZENworks 7 Linux Management - Dell Edition, managers will also be able to deploy, manage and maintain hardware, operating systems, and applications from a single, intuitive console, Novell said. This joint effort is intended to simplify Linux environments by consolidating and automating the management of diverse IT resources, eliminating effort, controlling costs, reducing training requirements, and optimizing performance.

It can also be used to automate mundane, repetitive and error-prone tasks with centralized and remote control, imaging, and inventory features. In particular, a Novell representative said, it should save costs for a company's remote sites that might not have local Linux administrator.

"The use of sophisticated management tools, such as Novell ZENworks 7 Linux Management - Dell Edition, can dramatically reduce the time it takes IT staffs to deploy, configure, maintain and upgrade operating systems and application portfolios," said Fred Broussard, IDC research manager in a statement.

"With staff costs ranking as the single largest element in total cost of ownership models, investments in automating systems management can have a dramatic impact in lowering costs. By managing their Linux environments more effectively, customers can avoid manual processes and simplify complex, time-consuming tasks," Broussard added.

Jeff Jaffe, executive VP and CTO at Novell, said in a statement that, "Working closely with Dell, we are excited to offer one of the first comprehensive integrated systems management tools for Linux. Together, we enable even broader Linux adoption in the enterprise by providing key manageability enhancements. As Dell's premiere offering for integrated Linux management solutions, we help customers better manage the complete life-cycle of their systems and truly take advantage of the power of Linux in the open enterprise."

While Dell has not settled on a single Linux for its desktops, the company is strongly supporting both SLES and RHEL on its servers. In addition, Michael Dell has been pushing the company's component suppliers to provide "good Linux driver support." By helping Novell to incorporate hardware management into ZENworks, Dell is underlining that it considers Linux driver support to be essential in its components.

ZENworks 7 Linux Management - Dell Edition is expected to be available from Dell starting April 19, for $69 per license.
