Managed Linux servers for your Web hosting needs
Apr. 19, 2007

Web hosting company Verio chose a lucky day to introduce its new Linux-based managed private server offering for small businesses. The day before, April 17, Microsoft admitted that it doesn't have a fix for a serious security hole in its server operating systems.

Windows 2000 and Server 2003 have both been hit hard by the W32/Delbot-AI worm.

As it happened, Verio's new Linux MPS will feature several new security enhancements including a preconfigured firewall for greater protection against DoS (denial of service) attacks and port scans.

Businesses can establish multiple IP addresses on a single physical server -- thus enabling businesses to assign unique, dedicated SSL certificates to different e-commerce sites or intranets to help mitigate concerns about privacy and security of online transactions.

Verio's Linux MPS, built on Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES version 4, takes advantage of the Linux platform's stability by bundling it with dedicated, enterprise-level hardware, a secure managed hosting platform, and managed services for added power and performance.

The company states that the solution, coupled with Verio's time-tested reliability, security and flexibility, delivers cost-efficient Linux hosting to midmarket and small businesses, as well as solution provider partners, including ISVs, Web developers and IT professionals.

In addition, all Verio MPS solutions include: managed backup to protect business data; a RAID for greater redundancy, reliability and speed; managed security patches; and fully managed hardware and software updates.

Each MPS system runs with 1GB of RAM on an Intel Xeon processor. Each account also comes with 60GB of storage and 1TB, over OC-3 and faster backbone links.

The Linux MPS introduces added security for customers with new firewall functionality. This preinstalled, preconfigured firewall lets customers take advantage of a firewall without requiring extensive technical knowledge. Experienced Webmasters have the ability to adjust their firewall settings to help protect their business from DoS attacks and port scans. Users can also configure settings to block certain ports that are not being used for added protection.

With these servers, Linux MPS users may add up to 49 additional IP addresses to their server, depending on the Linux MPS hosting plan chosen. With this capability, a business can assign unique, dedicated SSL certificates to different e-commerce sites or intranets, which helps mitigate common concerns about privacy and security of online transactions.

Webmasters get full control of their managed server, complete with root access, and 24x7x365 live support. With the current Windows security hole exploit, Microsoft's first choice in workarounds is to disable remote management over RPC (remote procedure call) capability for DNS Servers.

By default, the Linux MPS plan comes with the Apache 2.x Web server, Perl, Sendmail, DNS, MySQL and PostgreSQL. Linux MPS also gives users access to Verio's vinstall tool, and its extensive software library.

This allows mangers to quickly deploy a number of preconfigured applications that have been optimized for their managed dedicated server. For example, users can choose to install applications such as blogging or podcasting applications, anti-virus and spam protection, and additional languages such as PHP5. Administrators can also install their own choice of programs with RPM.

In a statement, Verio CEO Kiyoshi Maeda said "Our Linux MPS delivers a robust and reliable open-source managed Web hosting solution for businesses, including resellers and developers, who have more complex hosting requirements and need to do more than just host a simple Web site, but don't want the bother of managing hardware and software upgrades or security patch deployment."

Verio's Linux MPS is immediately available. Pricing begins at $349.95 per month for the Linux MPS Basic. More information can be found on the company's website.
