LPI rolls out new Linux training partner program

. . . keeping an eye on the penguin

The LPI (Linux Professional Institute, the vendor-neutral Linux certification organization, has announced an improved training partner program for Linux training organizations around the world: The LPI-ATP (LPI Approved Training Partner) program.

While certifications may not be as valuable as they have been in the past for IT workers, they can still be a valuable first step into the growing world of Linux jobs.

In addition, the LPI has recently moved from simply offering Linux certifications to working on helping would-be Linux system administrators, integrators and developers find jobs.

Now, the LPI is working on ensuring that Linux training programs deliver the goods people need to obtain a Linux certification.

LPI CEO Jim Lacey stated, "We are seeing an increased demand from both employers and exam candidates for recommendations of high quality training materials and programs. In response to this growing global market, we have improved our training partner program."

LPI's certification training, however, unlike the certification programs that are available from Novell and from Red Hat, is not built around any specific distribution. "LPI will continue to advocate a neutral approach to the adoption of open-source software, training and services," added Lacey.

One big reason why the LPI decided to formalize Linux training was that the demand for LPI-ATP is growing substantially in such emerging markets as China, Brazil and India, according to the LPI's Lacey. "For example, India is expected to train and hire close to one million IT professionals in the next five years -- 20 percent of these will be people who will need to demonstrate solid Linux skills and knowledge. This is a great opportunity for IT training organizations that partner with our certification program," he said.

At this time, there are 124 participating training organizations in 22 countries. The LPI is looking to add many more organizations to its list.
