Oracle, Novell streamline Linux grid deployment
Apr. 04, 2006

Novell Inc. and Oracle Corp. Tuesday agreed to combine forces to speed up the slow-but-steady development of grid systems for enterprise data centers on Linux.

The two companies announced the availability of a new accelerator service designed to help enterprise customers streamline the deployment of grid infrastructures for data centers that run on Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. The accelerator service works with a system stack that entails Oracle Database 10g, Oracle Real Application Clusters, Oracle Application Server 10g, and Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g.

The Oracle-Novell Accelerator is not a piece of software per se. It is a service that uses Oracle grid control management software and the automated storage management feature of Oracle Database 10g to provide customized management settings for monitoring and managing grid applications -- along with infrastructure software and storage.

Grid computing provides higher overall throughput for an enterprise, by leveraging a number of networked computers to distribute computing power across an infrastructure. Grids use the resources of many separate computers connected by a network (usually the Internet) to solve large-scale computation problems.

"Let's face it, Oracle Database 10g infrastructures aren't built by 'mouse-clicks' after dropping in software into a CD-ROM," said Oracle grid computing developer Paul Veilleux. "Grid computing deployments require careful planning when setting up best practices to enable virtualization, standardization, and automation procedures. That is why we have collaborated to provide a turnkey solution for the Oracle grid-enabled platform."

The new accelerator service is designed to assist existing customers when setting up new applications on Oracle Database 10g, in addition to customers migrating from previous versions of Oracle, Oracle said.

To employ the grid accelerator, skilled personnel from Oracle work with Novell, Hewlett-Packard Co., and Egenera Inc. to expedite implementation and deployment of Oracle's grid-computing infrastructure software onto SUSE Linux Enterprise servers. This accelerator service, already field-proven with existing joint customers of Oracle, Novell, HP, and Egenera, helps minimize risk while speeding time-to-market for enterprise grid-based applications, Oracle said.

The Oracle Database 10g Accelerator has already been tested and is currently available for HP's ProLiant Linux Server and BladeSystems and Egenera's BladeFrame system.

"Oracle and Novell share a common vision of providing a low-cost, high-performance computing platform for world-class enterprise data centers," said Dave O'Neill, group vice president, Oracle Technology Business Unit.

Oracle said pricing for the new service is offered on an individual consulting basis. For more information, go here.
